6 Do’s and Don’ts for Pastor Appreciation Month

Since it’s pastor appreciation month, I’ve been thinking about what people should and should not do to appreciate their pastor. Here is my list of six Do’s and Don’ts.

    DON’T

  1. Don’t compare him to a TV evangelist. Nothing is more discouraging for your pastor than to hear: “Pastor, the only two people I like to listen to are you and (insert name of charismatic yet entirely unbiblical, heretical, fancy-suit-wearing television evangelist). Both of you bless me every time I hear you!” When you say this, he’s questioning his communication skills and your capacity or logical thought. Even if you think it’s a compliment, don’t risk it!

3 Life Altering Lessons Learned from Addicts

I was naïve until I became a preacher’s wife. To me the world was a good place; at least for families that followed the rules, worked hard, and paid their bills. There were people who did bad things, but they lived out there somewhere. I was unlikely to bump into them in my safe suburban life.

Then my husband became a pastor. When the friend of a church member died of a drug overdose, we were thrust into the world of addiction. As we grieved with those left behind, our eyes were opened to the horror of substance abuse. We began to reach out to a community of addicts in our small town as the ‘pastor’ component in a Celebrate Recovery group.

During our weekly meetings I thought we were ministering to them. But I learned so much more about myself.

The Facts, The Reality, and The Talk

We are blessed to live in a seminary town. This is a great advantage to our urban church, providing a fresh crop of seminary students to serve our neighborhood. We enjoy watching eager ministers of the gospel put legs to their seminary education.

Eager to prove their salt, they use words like expositional, hermeneutics, and eschatology. They are eager to discuss 5 point Calvinism.   Invariably, we must have the talk.
